Learning about Similies

This week we have been learning about similies.  A similie is a comparison between two things using 'like' or 'as'.  We are learning to use similies in our writing to make our stories more interesting for our audience.  We wrote some poems using similies.  Here are a few to share:

                              My Smile
My smile is as big as a piece of cucumber.
My smile is as big as a piece of apple.
My smile is as big as a shiny crescent moon.
My smile is as big as an elephant’s trunk.
My smile is as big as a super big curly wave.
My smile is as big as a long, slimy, scaly snake.
My smile is as big as two furry bats wings stuck together.
My smile is as big as a bent sky tower.

My Incredible Tremendous Special Smile

My smile is like the wind pushing the trees and it sounds like this, “swish, swish, swish.”
My smile looks like a colourful butterfly.
My smile is like a poisonous snake slithering across the jungle.
My smile is as bright as the sun.
My smile is as happy as it could ever be.
My smile is like the shape of half a heart facing towards the sun.

Water Safety Session

Yesterday two lifeguards named Flash and Deedre from Llyod Elsmore Pools came to school to teach us about water safety.  We had a great time.  We learnt about the slide entry into the pool, how to pull someone who is in trouble in the water to safety and practised floating on our front and backs.  Here is a slide show of our session:

Do you have an Emergency Survival Kit?

With the recent earthquakes and natural disasters in Christchurch and Japan, we have had a lot of discussion and sharing of ideas about what we can do to be ready if an emergency happens in our area. The children brainstormed some ideas in groups about what should be included in an Emergency Survival Kit. Less than a quarter of the students in class said that they have an Emergency Survival Kit at home.  Get Ready, Get Thru - check out this link to be prepared:

World Maths Day!

Today is World Maths Day!

We had a discussion in our class about why maths is important and how we use it every day - when we go shopping, playing games like Monopoly, Yahtzee, measuring ingredients in baking, looking at diferent shapes and patterns etc.

To celebrate World Maths Day we went outside to play a game called "Ordering Numbers".   First we got into four teams.  Each team had an icecream container with a set of number cards from 0 to 9.

The first person had to run to the icecream container, get one card and run to a spot, place it on the ground, then run back.  Then it was the next persons turn.  The team that finished first with all their cards in the right order had to put their hands on their heads.

Mrs Melville checked to see if they were correct.  Then we played again but this time we had to order numbers from 10 to 20.  Lastly we had to order the numbers in 2's from 0 to 20.
We had a lots of fun!  Next time we will be even faster...
